We challenge assumptions, validate what we've learned and establish whether what we've identified is actually the thing worth working on.
Pulling it apart
Why push back?
Because most organisations are running on beliefs nobody has tested for a couple of years. Some hold up. Some don't. An independent perspective in the room is usually the fastest way to find out.
What do we test against?
Whatever evidence exists — numbers, timelines, escalations, the things people work around. If there's no evidence, that's a finding too.
Is this uncomfortable?
Sometimes, briefly. It's a lot less uncomfortable than doing the wrong thing well.
What this looks like in practice
Assumptions written down and tested, not debated
Agreement on what is true before anyone argues about what to do
